This group was part of the Army Service Forces and its mission and notable accomplishment was constructing the Alaska — Canada ALCAN Highway. This was considered one of the greatest if not the greatest engineering feats of the War. It was removed from a uniform. In the early dark days of WWII after Japan invaded the Alaskan Aleutian Islands capturing Kiska and Attu, the fear was the Japanese would push through Alaska down in to British Columbia and invade the US Pacific Northwest. This was not unreasonable. A Japanese submarine shelled Fort Stevens guarding the mouth of the Columbia River and launched a seaplane to firebomb the Pacific Northwest (fortunately during the rainy season). When in Prince Ruppert British Columbia locals shared that a Japanese float plane flew low over the deep water Port on a recon mission to photograph the harbors.
