While dogs were the most commonly portrayed animal in this ancient culture, the artists also portrayed other animals that lived in their surroundings. They were seen as companions, guardians and a food source. The Colima civilization developed in the shadow of the 13,000-foot Colima volcano, which stood the test of time between 200 BC to 500 AD. The Colima artists were the most talented school of sculptors of their time. They portrayed the whole panorama of their world, including human figurines, vessels and animals, with perceptive realism in clay effigies made to accompany the dead on the long road to the afterlife. The full flourishing of the Colima style produced masterpieces which are among the high points in pre-Columbian art. This bird effigy is an excellent example of this art style. It is round in shape, with a somewhat long neck, a slim and fine head with a carved crest on top, and round protruding eyes. There are wings on each side and a tail in the back. This adorable artifact has a lovable quality and feels like it is looking at you when seen from the top. This delightfully familiar original piece from the Colima culture is a perfect addition to any pre-Columbian collector and enthusiast.
