I have here for sale a book entitled THE VOYAGE OF THE ‘DISCOVERY’ by Captain Robert F. Scott, and published by John Murray, London, probably in 1929. First published in 1905. With 15 Plates plates. This is an account of the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04, written by the crews leader R.F. Scott. Split into 20 chapters this book chronicles the expedition from preparation to their return.A previous owner has very kindly added some pieces about Scott to the rear of the frontispiece, and to the rear of the title page — the details about when this book was printed appears on the rear of the title page, so it cannot now be seen. But this edition was first issued in 1929 so lets go with that. Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868 – 1912) was a British Royal Navy officer and explorer who led two expeditions to the Antarctic regions: the Discovery expedition of 1901–1904 and the Terra Nova expedition of 1910–1913. Scott is best known for his doomed last expedition, but it was this earlier voyage that truly began the opening up of the Antarctic continent and laid the groundwork for the ‘Heroic Age’ of Antarctic exploration. Bound in blue cloth hardboards with black lettering and illustration to front board, and gilt lettering to spine. Bumped to head and tail of spine. Binding is pulling at the title page, otherwise binding tight. Photos and newspaper clippings have been glued to the prelims and to blank pages in the preface. Illustrated endpapers. This book is in fair overall condition. 720 pages. 20.5 x 14 cm.
