Favorite Library Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales Profusely Illustrated In Black And White and with Color Plates Published By DeWolfe , Fiske & Co. Boston 1898 The only copyright date stated is 1898. Old pencil inscription on the front blank endpaper, dated Christmas , 1900. Hardcover. Pictorial Paper-Over-Cloth Binding. 5.25″ x 6.75″ , 176 Pages. Over 120 Years Old Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875). Numerous Illustrations, including several color lithograph plates. Condition The binding is worn, but solid. Wear at the binding edges, loss of much of the spine covering. ( see the photos ) The cloth spine-cover has been carefully reatached with a little Bookbinder’s glue, and is secure. The hinges are tight. Pencil inscription on the front endpaper. (» Ruth M. Davis , Christmas 1900 , from Auntie G. «) No other writing. The text pages are somewhat tanned with age, but are still flexible. The pages and the chromolithograph plates are otherwise in very good condition. The Contents: The Wild Swans ( a princess rescues her 11 brothers from a magic spell cast by an evil queen ) The Flying Trunk ( a young man uses a magic flying trunk to visit a Sultan’s daughter in exotic Turkey ) Ole-Luk-Oie ( Andersen based this fairy tale upon an old folk tale of a mysterious mythic being who gently takes children to sleep and, depending on how good or bad they were, shows them various dreams ) The Ugly Duckling ( sometimes an » ugly duck » is something more than just a duck, afterall ….) The Darning Needle ( which illustrates the old adage, » pride goes before a fall » …) The Swine Herd ( a young prince disguises himself as a swineherd — and teaches a valuable lesson to an arrogant princess ) The Storks ( a sad tale ) Stupid Johnny ( this story goes by several titles, including Thick-Headed Jack , Blockhead Hans , etc. — a squire’s son sets out, riding a goat, to win the hand of a king’s daughter ) The Snow Queen ( an evil hobgoblin makes a magic mirror that distorts the appearance of everything that it reflects — it fails to show the good and beautiful aspects of people and things, and magnifies their bad and ugly aspects. The demon goblin , seeking to do the most damage , takes the magic mirror to a school and shows it to the children…. from there commences a struggle between good and evil as experienced by Gerda and her friend, Kai. The Snow Queen is one of Andersen’s longest and most highly acclaimed stories ) The Brave Tin Soldier ( a goblin among the toys in the form of a jack-in-the-box makes trouble for a toy soldier made of tin ) The Little Mermaid ( one of Andersen’s most famous fairy tales ; the adventures of a young mermaid who is willing to give up her life in the sea as a mermaid to gain a human soul.
